Fashion ABCs

After a rather peculiar start of the Summer, it seems the warm days have finally arrived. We just can never tell for how long. The best is to just enjoy them while they last! Speaking of enjoying, check out Graeaea theatre company placing Deaf and disabled actors centre stage and challenging preconceptions. Truly bold and innovative! If you want to find out more about them, you can also listen to their Disability and…Podcast. And if the rainy days come back, well… remember it’s Disability Pride Month and that’s enough reason to celebrate wherever you are. This week we decided to celebrate the alphabet. Yes… we set ourselves a rather challenging task to bring you our fashion ABCs! Are you ready? Let’s go!

A: Adaptive

Ok, that was a no-brainer. Mauda is all about adaptive fashion and our goal is to help bring adaptive into the mainstream. Adaptive fashion has for too long been relegated to specialist shops, but we’re confident adaptive will soon be part of any other fashion collection. Just like we do at Mauda: one garment, several fastening options to better suit your needs.

B: Belt

Not sure about anyone else, but I can’t leave home without a belt. It actually feels like I’m “naked” somehow, so an essential item for me. And if you think belts are only required for garments with belt loops, you may be missing out. A nice belt can be a statement accessory and completely change an outfit. If you’re still sceptical check out our Caroline Dress: it’s almost two dresses in one. And the belt is elasticated, so no fiddly buckles to get in your way!

C: Cardigan

They’re not just there to protect you from the cold. Choose the right fabric and you can get a stylish garment to protect you from the cold or keep you cool in the warm days. Like our 100% linen Flora Cardigan. White linen is enough to get positive Summer vibes.

D: Dress

You’ll never go wrong with a dress! Whatever your style, whatever the style of the dress. Pair with boots to smarten up your look. Or go casual with a pair of stylish trainers. You’re guaranteed a successful outcome!

A yellow buffet dress with ruffled trims around the elbow and knees. The placket goes from the collar to the knees and you can opt from a range of available fastenings. The sleeves are puffed from the elbow to the wrist.

E: Earrings

Everyone’s different and everyone has their can’t-live-without accessory. I love earrings! They completely change your face and can turn a simple outfit into something unique. Something that resonates with you and conveys your identity. I particularly love my Viana heart earrings my mother gave me a few years back. A little bit of home I can carry with me wherever I go.

F: Footwear

Footwear can make or break and outfit. And even you! Think about how long you spend on your feet. That should be reason enough for you NOT to compromise on comfort over style. Good quality footwear will give you comfort, ensure feet hygiene and be stylish at the same time. Take your time and choose wisely.

G: Gloves

Although we wouldn’t think of gloves in the Summer, this pandemic made us more aware of “hand contamination” in our daily lives: shopping trolleys, bus seats and rails… Wearing gloves in the Summer no longer sounds like such a bad idea. And why not? Women used to rock gloves all year round back in the day and I won’t say no to that!

H: Hat

Similar to cardigans, a hat can protect you from the cold or heat. It can be as simple and practical as you wish, or as intricate and stylish as the occasion demands. I’m a beanie person. My husband is a baseball cap master! What about you?

I: Inclusive design

Again, no brainer. Inclusive design is imperative, not just in fashion, but across all industries. For Mauda that translates into easy fastenings, label pockets for sensory comfort, breathable fabrics and lots of trial in error until the perfect garment is achieved!

J: Jacket

A nice jacket is a woman’s best friend. Wear it over a blouse, a shirt or even a bra and get a different look each time. Jackets are versatile garments that can instantly and effortlessly change the look of an outfit. I never go out without one.

K: Knits

Yes, we’re a Scottish brand, but Scotland is so much more than kilts, so the “K” is for “knits”. Although a proper traditional kilt is amazing piece of craftsmanship! However, Scotland has some great quality knits as well and being a “breezy” country (hehe) you definitely need a good knit with you all year round. Very versatile as well: whether you go for a jumper or a shawl, it always works. You can really smarten up a shawl with a nice belt too, so what are you waiting for?

L: Lipstick

After what feels like a lifetime wearing face-masks I’m more than ever missing the days when I could wear lipstick without staining masks or making a mess of my face. A very special and pragmatic lady I know has since day one invested in support brackets for face masks. Her make-up always looks fabulous, so these brackets definitely help keep lipstick intact. If this is a concern for you, I’d recommend investing in one as well. I may do so myself, if not just now, definitely before my holiday in September.

M: Maxi Dress

Mandatory in the Summer. Imagine sunset by the beach and a light flowy dress. I’m ready for a cold drink by the shore 😊

N: Negligee

Well, a bit of French glamour is mandatory. Elegant and light: the perfect sleepwear.

O: Overcoat

It can never go wrong. With the rise of second-hand fashion there’s something for every taste.

P: Poncho

Alternatively, a poncho can be equally stylish and versatile. A vibrant colour and a soft fabric are all it takes to bright up a cold grey day.

Q: Quilts

Whether that’s a dress, a coat or even a blanket. Who doesn’t like a quirky quilt? They’re back on the runways from around the world, so what are you waiting for?

R: Raincoat

Regardless of where you live, there will always be a day when these will come in handy. In Scotland… any day of the year really, it just depends on the time of the day 😊 You can find them on all sorts of styles and colours to suit everyone’s individuality. No excuses!

S: Skirt

Mini, midi or maxi – a skirt is a fashion ABC must-have. Go for what matches your unique style.

Sadie Skirt

T: Trousers

We’re approaching the end of our fashion ABCs and skinny jeans are apparently “out”. However, women have enough stylish trouser options, from palazzo style to bootcut. What’s your style?

U: Underwear

Go for whatever your style is. Similar to footwear, make sure it’s comfortable, stylish and hygienic. Breathable fabrics preferably! Make sure you don’t compromise on quality.

V: V-neck

They’re stylish and suit most body shapes!

W: Waistcoat

Who says waistcoats need to be classic or boring? There’s lots of choice out there and maybe even an addition to Mauda’s Winter collection (watch this space)!

X: XL Blazer

Extra-large blazers are in, so take your pick! Over a plain t-shirt or even lingerie, they can be the ultimate statement garment if properly styled. Let your creativity flow.

Y: Yoke

Well… not a garment, but everyone can benefit from a shirt in their wardrobe. And shirts have yokes. So do shirt dresses. And so does our Sandra Dress, made with 22 pieces of fabric 😊

Z: Zipper or zipperless

That’s right. Adaptive fashion needs to consider easy fastenings and zippers can be quite fiddly. So alternatives are essential to improve the dressing experience. That’s why we have a number of garments with Velcro, magnet and snap fastenings options, so that customers can choose what best suits their needs.

Maria Bralette

Phewww… that wasn’t easy at all! I hope this has given you some ideas for your own Fashion ABCs. Everyone’s different and so is style. That’s what makes us unique! What are your fashion ABCs? Comment below if you have any other suggestions or additions. Have a nice week x
